When Elegance Berkeley, the city’s newest seniors’ community, opens in the Poet’s Corner neighborhood, it will offer Bay Area seniors a place to receive discreet care support and a range of programs and amenities designed to help residents stay engaged, socially active and part of a thriving community.

We spoke with Nicole Dodson, Regional Vice President of Elegance Living, about what Elegance Berkeley will offer residents, families and the city as a whole.

Q: In a few sentences, who is Elegance Berkeley for and how will it benefit them?

A: Our community is designed to make life in Berkeley easier, safer and more accessible for seniors. You receive discreet support with bathing, dressing, and managing your medications while having direct access to fitness, art, and lifelong learning opportunities right outside your door. Cleaning and maintenance, transport to appointments, are taken care of. You have amazing and healthy food prepared by a chef on site. When you’re trying to manage all of these things on your own at home or relying on your family to help you, it can take up a lot of your time and energy. Living at Elegance Berkeley frees you to do what you want to do, which is important to you.

Q: How are the apartments and how many are available?

A: We have 94 apartments in studio and one bedroom floor plans starting at $6,850 per month. They have high ceilings and kitchenettes, and many have stunning bay views. We are private paying; long-term care insurance and veteran’s benefits may apply. They fill up fast because people want those apartments with a great view.

Q: Are tours of the building available? When can residents start moving into the community?

A: Yes, you can now visit the building! We are excited to show the community and expect residents to start moving in early July. There is no place like this in the East Bay, so I strongly encourage you to come see it.

Q: What kind of equipment and programs can people expect?

A: In addition to an art lab, classroom and lounge, our residents will enjoy a bistro and wine bar, a full-service restaurant, a beautiful courtyard with dedicated fitness equipment, a family restaurant, and an outdoor movie theater. We also have an indoor theater, recording listening room, massage room, telehealth exam room, and on-site physical and occupational therapy. And rooms dedicated to sensory relaxation and music for our residents with memory problems.

Our tailored programs include yoga, tai chi, cardio, ecotherapy and cleansing breathing, museum visits, inspirational services, on-site California Jazz Conservatory tours, virtual travelogues, volunteer projects, social cafes and more.

Q: What inspired the focus on the arts in your facilities and programs?

A: The arts and learning are important parts of a self-actualizing life at any age, and Berkeley is central to this philosophy. East Bay seniors are well educated and well traveled. We therefore work in partnership with several local arts and learning organizations to support the interests of our residents. We have a wonderful onsite art lab designed for young and old where we will collaborate with Sticky Art Lab for onsite intergenerational art programs, Brushstrokes for pottery and ceramics, and Kala Art Institute for a variety courses.

We are also excited to offer our residents the UC Berkeley Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) Continuing Education.

Q: What is special about your location?

A: Our location on San Pablo Avenue near University Avenue puts it at the center of a thriving neighborhood of international restaurants, local businesses and specialty shops, all within walking distance.

Of course, the people of Berkeley have a passion for the arts, theater and culture. When they choose to live at Elegance Berkeley, they certainly won’t feel like they’ve been taken away from their lives and the things that truly drive them. In fact, it will be easier than ever to continue participating, contributing, and enjoying regular opportunities to interact with people of all generations.

Q: How will Elegance Berkeley benefit Poet’s Corner?

A: Our goal from the very beginning was to make our community a hub of activity and a fully contributing part of the neighborhood. We are on the street, with windows all around and part of the space dedicated to retail. The ground floor features a living room, a classroom where local organizations can host speaker series, yoga, and many events of interest to the neighborhood, and a custom-designed art lab. We will have a rotating art gallery and there will be exciting programs every day. We are therefore committed to being a vibrant part of the city and adding value to East Bay.
