GENERAL

mountaineer’s caravan

The Mountaineer Athletic Club will host the WVU Coaches Caravan from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Purple Iris at Hartwood Mansion.

Basketball coach Bob Huggis and football coach Neal Brown will be in attendance, along with other coaches and administrators.

Individual tickets are $50.

A table sponsorship is $750 for 10 guests.

WVU Bus Travel

The Mountaineer Fan Club in the Eastern Panhandle has scheduled two bus trips to football games:

They are for Pitt on September 1 and Virginia Tech on September 22.

The cost is $55 per person for transportation only; people have to get their own game tickets.

The bus will leave Martinsburg (Pill & Pill Law Office) six hours before kick-off

for the Pitt game and seven hours before for the Virgia Tech game.

The bus will return to Martinsburg immediately after the games, both of which will take place on Thursday evenings.

To guarantee a spot, please pay at Pill & Pill (85 Aikens Center, Martinsburg).

summer camps

Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is now accepting registrations for these upcoming camps for children ages 3-12. As with all our activities, pre-registration is mandatory. You can register online or download one of the forms at www.mbcparks-rec.org

TinyTots Soccer Camp – $40/child – a four-day camp for 3-year-olds (starting June 6) and their parents. From 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. from June 6 to 9.

TinyTots Sports Camp — $40/child — a four-day camp for 3- and 4-year-olds (starts June 20). Parent involvement required. From 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on June 22 and 23.

Mighty Mites Soccer Camp — $55/child — a four-day camp for 4- and 5-year-olds (starting July 1). Shin guards and soccer shoes mandatory. From 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. from July 5 to 8.

Mighty Mites Basketball Camp — $55/child — a four-day camp for kids ages 5-7 (starting June 1). From 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. from June 13 to 16.

Youth Flag Football Camp — $40/child — a three-day camp for children ages 7-10 starting on the first day of camp. From 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. from June 26 to 28.

Berkeley Summer Adventure Camps:

Camps will begin June 13 and run weekly through August 8. Choose either the Berkeley 2000 Rec Center or the W. Randy Smith Rec Center.

Open to 6-12 year olds (children must be 6 years old on 09/01/2021 and no more than 12 years old on the 1st day of camp)

Thematic weekly camps

$175 per child/per week ($10 discount for multiple children OR multiple weeks available – cannot be combined)

Camp hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (before and after daycare available for an additional fee)

Camp locations: Berkeley 2000 Rec Center and W. Randy Smith Recreation Center (register for a location)

Fun activities, games and local excursions to keep kids entertained this summer.

Swimming lessons

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is now registering for their 2022 Summer Swim Lessons online or in person.

The following courses will be offered:

Preschool classes (3 to 5 years old) must include the 3 with the parents and the 3 alone. $35 per one week session

Courses for young people (6 years and over) with levels 1 to 3, 4 beginners and 4 advanced and level 5. Prices range from $60 to $70 per two-week session, depending on the length of the course.

These courses take place from Monday to Friday. Morning or evening sessions are available.

WVSSAC Coaching Course

West Virginia Coaching classes are scheduled to be held in May and June in the Spring Mills High School library.

A session takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 14 and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on May 15.

The second session takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 11 and from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on June 12.

Lifeguard training

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is accepting registrations for a lifeguard training course for ages 15 and older.

There are 15 places available on a first come, first served basis. This course is not available for online registration and must be done in person at the administrative office.

Classes will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 19 and 20 and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 22 and 23 at the pool at War Memorial Park.

Attendance at all course days is mandatory as part of the certification.

Fee of $200 per person (includes instructions, manual and CPR mask); the certification is valid for two years and covers CPR/AED/first aid in the course.

Pre-registration is required and payment is due at time of registration. A valid driver’s license or birth certificate as proof of age is required at time of registration.

Completing this course does not automatically guarantee employment at an M-BC Parks and Recreation pool, but the department encourages all successful participants to apply to join the summer lifeguard team.

Beginner Yoga Workshop

Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation is accepting applications for Beginner Yoga.

This class is specially designed for people who have never taken a yoga class. Changes will be made to accommodate everyone. The instructor will strive to make all individuals feel safe and comfortable. Students do not need to be able to touch their toes, but they should be willing to try.

This is a six week introductory course. This course takes place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays from April 28 to June 2.

The cost is $90.

BASKETBALL

Spring Tournaments

A series of basketball tournaments are scheduled at the W. Randy Smith Center in Inwood.

They are intended for students in grades 3 to 12 for boys and girls.

Here are the dates: May 7; and May 14 and 15.

The cost is $255 per team and each team is guaranteed three games.

Lowe’s Memorial

The 31st Annual Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department/John D, Lowe Jr. Memorial Golf Classic will be held May 13 at Cress Creek Golf and Country Club.

EPAC-DST Tournament

The Eastern Panhandle Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is hosting its EPAC-DST Golf Tournament at 9 a.m. May 27 at Locust Hill in Charles Town.

The event aims to raise funds for scholarships, youth/mentorship programming and chapter public service activities.

Registration for the event includes a breakfast snack, lunch, golf cart, greens and greens fees, a gift bag and a chance to win a door prize.

Registration and breakfast start at 9:00 a.m., with a gunshot at 10:30 a.m., and then your foursome can share prizes and have fun.

Pre-registration fees are $90 per player or $340 per foursome through April 30. Registration closes May 25.

Any golfer who does not have a foursome will be paired with others to complete a team.

There are also sponsorship opportunities for individuals and companies.

Hutzler Classic

The 35th Annual Bernie Hutzler Golf Classic will take place on June 6 at Cress Creek in Shepherdstown. The event is back in full pre-pandemic form, with morning and afternoon flights to accommodate up to 200 golfers.

Morning call time for carts is at 7:00 a.m. and afternoon at 12:45 p.m. Registration will begin 30 minutes prior to the start of each flight, and flight preference will be given on a first-in-time basis. arrived, first served. Golfers may form their own teams but will be subject to handicap restrictions as determined by the Cress Creek Golf Professional.

Proceeds from the tournament will be used to benefit WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg and WVU Medicine Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson. Since the Golf Classic’s inception in 1988, more than $2.2 million has been raised to fund equipment and programs at both hospitals.

SOFTBALL

Martinsburg Fastball

Martinsburg Fastpitch Softball is accepting online registrations for the 2022 season.

The league, which plays at Charlotte Prather Park and is over 60, is open to girls and women between the ages of 5 and 25 from all parts of the Eastern Panhandle.

The league’s goal is for players to “learn the basics, teamwork, and a love of softball.”

The cost for tee-ball players (ages 5-7) is $55. The rest of the age groups are $75. They include League C (8-10), League B (11-13), League A (14-18) and Senior League (18-25).
