Free Summer Activities in Henderson County for Families or Adults

With the the high cost of living, having fun can be expensive. Fortunately, Henderson County has a number of free activities to keep adults and kids entertained this summer.

Back to school party in the park

  • August 5 at 6:30 p.m. in Jackson Park, Henderson County Parks and Recreation and Fostering Hopes, a nonprofit foster family, is hosting a back-to-school party with food trucks, inflatables, games and a screening free from Monsters Inc. at dusk.

Community Kick-Ball Game

  • Henderson County Parks and Recreation is hosting a free adult/young adult kickball game at the Edneyville Community Center, 15 Ida Rodgers Drive, August 16 at 7 p.m.
  • Participants must Register online on the Henderson County Recreation Website or in person at 708 S. Grove St., Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Food Truck and Flix

  • Henderson County Parks and Recreation will screen Space Jam at Tuxedo Park on July 29 and Luca at Dana Park on August 12. The food trucks on site open at 7 p.m. and the film begins at nightfall, around 8 p.m.

HCPRD Water Day

  • On August 11 from 1 to 3 p.m., Henderson County Parks and Recreation is hosting a water day for ages 12 and under at the Edneyville Community Center, 15 Ida Rodger Dr. The event will include water games, inflatables and a Slip-N -Slide.
  • Participants must Register online on the Henderson County Recreation Website or in person at 708 S. Grove St., Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A slide and a toboggan make a very special meeting place in the garden.

HCPRD gymnasiums

  • In the summer, Henderson County Parks and Recreation has two gyms open for free daily activities.
  • The AAC Gym at 708 S Grove St. hosts daily free pickleball and basketball games in addition to open gym hours. Certain days and time slots are set aside for league games or summer camps, so call 828-697-4884 or email [email protected] for exact times and dates.
  • The Edneyville Elementary School gymnasium at 2875 Pace Road offers basketball on Mondays, pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and volleyball on Wednesdays from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Oklawaha Greenway

  • Walk or bike the 3.5 mile Oklawaha Greenway that winds through wetlands, prairies and forests to connect Jackson, King Memorial, Sullivan, Patton and Berkeley Mills parks.
  • The fully paved greenway is a five-minute drive from downtown Hendersonville and is accessible from five parking lots.
  • According to Friends of the Oklawaha Greenway websitethe greenway has two birding “hotspots” designated by eBird because of the wide variety of birds it attracts.
