Highway 78 tractor unit, police say truck crash kills 1
BERKELEY HEIGHTS – A crash between a dump truck and tractor-trailer in the eastbound lanes of Route 78 on Monday afternoon resulted in at least one death, state police said, causing delays in both directions.
The vehicles were traveling eastbound near Exit 41 in Berkeley Heights, but the collision partially ended in the westbound lanes by 3:00 p.m.
State police said there was one death in the crash, but did not reveal any details on Monday afternoon.
All eastbound lanes were closed for approximately an hour and traffic was diverted at Exit 43.
Traffic was moving in both directions at 4:30 p.m., but the largest delay was on Westbound Highway 78, where two lanes had been closed for emergency vehicles and center bulkhead repairs.
Westbound delays began nearly ten miles from the Garden State Parkway.
An accident on the west side on October 14 closed two westbound lanes in a construction area near Exit 43, creating massive delays during afternoon commutes.
