Lucas Magnaudet advances in battle in the bay

Cal junior Lucas Magnaudet won twice on Saturday to qualify for next week’s Battle in the Bay.


BERKELEY- Junior Men’s Tennis Cal Lucas Magnaudet reached the singles final of the Battle in the Bay Qualifier on Saturday and advanced to next week’s Battle in the Bay, as the qualifying tournament wrapped up at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The event was supposed to end on Sunday, but officials ended the tournament early due to rain in the Sunday forecast.

Magnaudet defeated Maxim Verboven of UNLV, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the quarter-finals and defeated Neel Rajesh of Stanford, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, in the semi-finals Saturday. James Watt of Saint Mary’s, the other singles finalist, also qualified for the Battle in the Bay.

In doubles, the Cal pair of Derrick Chen and Jean-Kim won twice on Saturday to reach the final. Sophomore Chen and freshman Kim defeated UNLV’s Aaron Bailey and Dusan Rsovac, 8-1, in the quarterfinals and then defeated Cal’s sophomore duo. Mikey Wright and Andrei Volgin of UC Davis, 8-5, in the semifinals. The Bears would have faced Watt and Thibaud Maxant of Saint Mary’s in the final. With Kim and Chen retired, Maxant and Watt moved on to Battle in the Bay from September 23-25 ​​at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco.

Also next week, a contingent of bears will participate in the 10th Annual College Invitational at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa Valley.
